QUESTIONS

Please leave any questions concerning THE SWORD AND THE FISH here.

I tried to keep things from becoming confusing, but there were a few times I had to add lines describing what you should do. In addition to questions about where to go and what to do, I will answer any questions concerning the game: how to get it running, original conception, keyboard buttons to use, and how to do certain things using the RPG2000 editor that I did. Got a noodle-baker? Maybe concerned something might be an error but aren't sure? Query here.

Hey Joel, congrats on finishing the game. I've spent my morning playing, and it's pretty damn sweet.

Except...

I think I ran into a broken quest. What do I do to get the "machine part from the furnace" to Forgor? I go to his mansion and nothing happens (talking to him does nothing), and going to the mine doesn't work either, as it is still blocked off.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume I'm just screwing something up, but any tips would help.

I will fix any error that lets you into Forgor's Mansion at all at this point.

A:
When you're getting the split quests note that Forgor is at the "excavation site." When the mayor tells him of the propeller still in the earth, he goes off to dig. It's to the west of the area you've travelled so far. You must give the machine part to him there.

Joel, the game sounds great but I'm having some display issues. The bottom half of the images are blank. I've tried re-installing the game and updating my video drivers, any other suggestions?

2:47 PM
Blogger Joel Minty said...

No clue. No one else has had the problem, but RM20000 isn't exactly a precise science. I suggest, sadly, attempting to download it all again. Maybe you were multitasking and botched the DL.

I've never heard of that error.
Videocards should have little to do with it, since the crappiest ones ought to work.

Joel.

In whinter, there's two bugs that can cause some issues. First is the staircase maze. There's one staircase that leads to the underground section, but no matter which staircase you go in, you get lead to the same section. The other problem is that there's no apparant exit area to the castle portion of the Narnia house.

Glitch: After you get Quadlink, if you go back into Cameloaf castle it repeats the court scene.

Glitch: If you go back into Ice Haven after getting Sweet C, it goes into an older version of the town.

Glitch: There's a characterset file missing for the inside of the Brothel.

Problem: If you don't pick up The Sword at the end of the game, you basically just killed yourself. Also, if you didn't, Hex still acts like you have it.

Problem: There are a few tiles that act as walls but can be walked on in the futuristic world, along with a few other maps.

Mistake: There are only six chapters, but at the end of five it says "End of chapter six." and "Chapter seven."

6:14 AM
Blogger Joel Minty said...

A: Whinter, staircases. Damn! That's really hard to fix not knowing which one. It's designed to be mazey and is mazey for me as well.

As for the Castle in Narnia, there IS an exit. You've just got to click on the rapidly moving square of ice. It's hard, so you gotta hammer Z until you match squares with it. Part of the Narnia wackiness!

The Quadlink glitch has been fixed already.
The Brothel glitch has been fixed already.

The Sweet C/old Ice Haven map glitch FIXED. Thank you.

For the tiles in the futureworld, it would take forever to fix without a precise lock on where or what tile.

Chapter issue FIXED. Thank you!

The Sword now must be picked up. Thank you.

Good glitches guys, woo! Thanks!

Glitch: If you go back to Hoogie village after the band leaves your party, it'll still show Edge talking to the little girl labeled Shina.

Glitch: At Menats, if you get Quadlink and Sweet C to make the guards move then go switch characters, it'll still show Quadlink and Sweet C in the discussion.

Glitch: You can enter Troy at the beginning of the game and in the events it shows Sweet C and Quadlink talking.

in panzer afrit, once you can enter the temple and press the switch, it uncovers a staircase that teleports you to the exact same position, and while that may have been the intention it wouldn't hurt to provide some notification saying that or something.

1. Fixed. I had this fixed before, but then deleted the map entirely and put all the triggers on one map.

2. That Menats bit always bugged me. I'll cure it.

3. Already covered, thanks.

1. Nice glitch find. This is actually something I never finished. The games very big and easy for me to forget a few things. I will add to this shortly. Something funny.

whats about those zombie in a cage with the sleeping guard? and whe girl thats shes gonna fall we done help her?

Hey Stan401.

In the Raul Mountains you need two ice crystals to get past a) the lava room, and b) the area past the Indiana Jones bridge. I expect you only have gotten one, and thus haven't uesd the second one at the icy stalligmite. The first ice shard can be found in an ice temple, the second is a big slab of ice visible in the room with the know-it-all old man. The falling woman and the zombie cage aren't critical.

Hope that helps.

I have Uoe in my party when i try to read it, still no turkey... i am wondering is it a bug or i just have not solved the puzzle... thanks man... great and entertaining game thus far.

I love a nice kudos.

Both things you mentioned a GLITCHES and have been fixed for the new version I'll release sometime closer to the Misaos. If they aren't in the KNOWN ERRORS tab on my main page, it's because I haven't updated it recently.

So don't fear! And don't spend much time bothering over that etching in the rune. As of the current version, it does nothing.

Enjoy Uoe.

This is a great game, but suddenly the random encounters have become very difficult for me. I just started the last chapter and the first place I decided to go to was Whinter. However, I couldn't defeat any of the enemies there. The battles are very hard in all the other places I go as well. I've never had any problems with the random encounters before, so is there some sort of uber equipment or whatever that I'm missing? My party is:

Clifford, Level 31, Lightning Sword, Mako Red Shield, Mako Red Full-Plate, Mako Red Visor, Ring of Shielding

Forgor, Level 29, Mako Red Scimitar, Rapidfire Crossbow, Mako Red Half-Plate, Aztec Helm, Jade Ring

Presto Mundo, Level 28, Magic Wand, Mako Red Shield, Mako Red Half-Plate, Frogstar Conicle, Genji Gloves

Zaknafien, Level 27, Gong Mallot, Harpoon, Mako Red Half-Plate, Ballaclava, Robotic Boots

Thanks in advance.

1:13 PM
Blogger Joel Minty said...

Hey anon!

Some people have complained about the random encounters frequency, but not their difficulty yet.

I suggest the following.

1. Re-equip Presto Mundo with an item NOT Genji glove. Part of the joke with that item is it has the name of a great item from FF3, but in this game it ROYALLY SUCKS! lol!

2. Go to places you've been that are peaceful. Some have little plots and items to pick up without slogging through random encounters. Also, some places that were easier dungeons then are still so now.

3. The 5 dungeons for the remaining deities are progressively harder. I'd attempt to tackle a certain castle off the coast of Zambooka first.

4. Your levels are good. Your party seems smart. I'd grab any Wayfarer's Cloaks you can find.

Finding *ULT* items can really help a hero. I know for a fact 2 of the heroes you have in this party can get their *ULT* items without getting into one battle...

And Presto Mundo already has his.

Also: Sometimes ONE extra level is all that's needed to get that wicked spell to change the tide.

Try to level all your heroes evenly or it may haunt you later.

Sound good? :)
Thanks for playing and your questions!

Hi Joel, thanks for making such a cool game. The only problem is, I think my file is kinda screwed up permenantly. I just finished rescuing Whinter from Zaarut, and when I go back to the airship, I get on, the talking with Quadlink and co. happens, then it goes to a black screen and I get a game over. I'm sure this is my fault, but I wanna be sure.

11:01 PM
Blogger Malfarious J said...

Hey anonymous.

Don't know what to say. If it's mentioned in the 'known errors' section of this site, then I've "fixed" it as best I can.

I've heard of similar things happening, but can't figure out why and they only seem to happen to specific people, (not everyone). A friend had it break @ the 1st choice of plot.

I don't know what to say.

Do you know the program well? Because then you could hack your way into the game itself and skip past that part quickly. I think this worked for a friend.

I've nearly finished the game but have spent hours on the dark room and can't get by. I've tried doing it one step at a time but can't get anywhere.

Any chance you could post the walking pattern such that I could finish the game. I hate to have gone all that way just to get stuck.

5:32 PM
Blogger Malfarious J said...

I was wondering when there'd be a questionb about the dark room.

Ok, here it is step by step: U=Up, D=Down, L=Left, R=Right.

From the square that gets dark.
D, D, D, E, E, U, ENTER- Should turn on first light. You'll be below it.

E,E,E,E,E,E,E,E,E,U,E,E,D,E,E,D,ENTER- Should turn on second light. For the 9 E's, you can just hammer E instead of counting. The key's the little bit after.

E,D,D,W,U, ENTER- should turn on same light, only now from the bottom closer to the exit. You'll be below a column.

W,S,W,W,S,S,S,S,S,E,S- THE LIGHT! Hit the switch to NEVER have to do it again.

Enjoy the end of the game!

A few maybe glitch-esque things.
1) If you go back into the underground passage way after first sneaking into Mako Red Territory, the guy (whose house it is you entered) moves back to block the passage and won't move if you talk to him.

2) In the last chapter, when you re-enter Cameloaf Castle, you enter into a dialogue with Garath and the Blue guards, but the castle interior appears empty.

3) When battling the Wild Woman and the Nihilist Priest in Metropia, they have no battle images. (Maybe Wild Woman is on purpose?)

4) Minor spelling error - when a character is numb it reads "[Name] is pertrified." rather than petrified. Not sure if this is just a pun I'm not getting though.

5) Once when I was in the boat in the final ep, I got a "???clear water???" error message and the game shut down. Haven't experienced it since though, so I'm not sure what triggered that.

Well, that's all I've found so far, haven't finished the game yet. Definitely enjoying it though - spent way too much time playing and not doing what I should be doing. Thanks for making such a good game! Hope to finish by the end of the weekend. :D

I'm a little bit stuck in the Echelon Center. I got the Ghandi CD, but can't find any new doors to go through now. I've tried all the terminals, though I suspect I need to do something with the offline one. I've wandered around the loop a few times, but now pretty much don't know what to do. A small hint?

10:22 AM
Blogger Joel Minty said...

hey anon: here's your hint/query of help.

1. The Ghandi CD is a non-issue, a fun joke that references a part so early in the game NO ONE remembers it. I think Zaknafien says "he heard Ghandi's coming out with a new CD-Rom" at one point.

2. The Offline terminal - not important.

3. The top right of that loop is the key. There's 2 doors to get past in the top right, one that leads to a balcony and one that leads to another final terminal with different dialogue (and an important choice wherein you've got to pick the smart option) It's got to do with the "L.E." Have you run into the "L.E." yet? That's an acronym for a specific thing you must pass. You'd know if you found it.

Have "Code Clearance B" ?
Heard anything about "spying"?

5:20 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nope, haven't gotten any of those things (code b clearance, spying, etc) yet. Maybe I'll go back and try a tile by tile search to see if I'm missing something really obvious.

7:14 PM
Blogger Joel Minty said...

It should work if you snoop. The level works for sure, and there's LOTS of doors and switches to open them that need to be done. CODE CLEARANCE B opens the door (from the entrance) right, up the stairs, right, up - door.

Try everything and it should work. If not, keep messaging me details - I'll help you through it.

Made it out finally, yay! And as a plus(kinda), the high encounter rate made everyone go up 10 levels as a side-effect.

Thanks so much for being helpful. In return I grant you with the not quite as lovely minor glitches
-in the echelon center, when you go up the passage beneath the three set of green pipes right across from the entrance, on the first step your character can walk all the way across beneath the pipes (while the others limit him to the width of the passage). When he's walking across, the parts of the pipe where the scratches are end up behind his head. Dificult to explain, I can screenshot it maybe.
-minor spelling thing "woodie/hungry tree endevors to chuck wood"

You sure played a lot since Troy! Congrats. Glad you like it.

9:59 PM

JOEL:

Mim, for going through Azero you should have Clifford, Penelope, Presto Mundo, and Forgor. I'm confused, though. What should happen once you find an exit away from aztecs leading underground is it eventually runs into a rich man - who Forgor helps you past. Once past him, when you head into the next room the rocks should fall BEHIND YOU. You should be able to continue traveling deeper into the underground passageway with the rocks simply blocking your way back. If that's not the case, explain.

PS: Or try doing it again and making it a clean go through. Be sure to have Forgor.

Hi Joel
I have a previous game save from the start of the ruins and have just gone straight to the rich man. Bribed him, gone down the stairs, rocks fallen, then down the next set of stairs but in this passage, about 6 steps in, is a small pile of purple rocks(background kind) which block the way down - I can't get round them. I can see people. This is where I am stuck.

12:21 PM
Anonymous mim said...

Hi Joel
I think I have found the problem.
In SAFv1 the passage space is 2 tiles wide. In SAFv2 the passage space is only one tile wide therefore you cannot get past the piece of rubble.
Just spent the last 12 hours doing SAFv1 to find this out.
I shall continue with Version1.

8:46 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

JOEL:

Mim, thank you, this is indeed an error. I can suggest something to save your v.2.0 game - if you know how - go into the program, click on World 3.0 and find Azero Ruins, then Undersea Trek, then scroll through the maps until you find the one with the rock and the people. Here, simply delete the rock - or make the corridor wider (which is what I have done to v.2.0)

Version 1.0 has other errors which might pop up to ruin things, so I'd suggest editing the game yourself - if you can - if not, I can tell you one place not to go in v.1.0 which makes an error.

Peace

So I have gone through the passage and done the game until I can save on SAFv1, then put this saved game into SAFv2. I will let you know how this goes. If all else fails I will download SAFv2 again (if you have done this amendment) from your website.

Hi there. I'd love to play your game, but I'm having a problem with installation.

I've downloaded the file, unzipped, and when I go into the directory, the only clickable files are RPG_RT.exe and rm2k_fp.exe, which changes the text. When I click the first one, it just pops up a box that says "RPG Maker 2000 Runtime Package Setup," and when I close it nothing happens. How do I install the game?

12:18 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey.

The install should work - I just did it this morning. The readme takes you through it, but I'll explain here:

open the zip and unzip everything into a folder. In that folder should be about 6 things, a read me, a editor help file, a wrecker-something-or-other, RTPe.exe, RM2000.exe, and rm2k_fp. Run the _fp file, it's a quick font fixer. It should work simply. Then 2x-click RTPe.exe. It will load a install screen. Click next and find the folder you want the game it. Keep hitting next and it will install a pile of files. If it asks you to keep an old file, do. It will say when done. Then do the same with RM2000.exe. Once this is done, the game should be installed, and you can play it by finding it in projects and going wayyyy down to find The Sword and the Fish.exe with Clifford's head on it.

That's my best help. If RM2000.exe isn't there for some reason, either re-extract from zip or try downloading again. It should all be there...

Joel, SatF is the most fun game I've ever played in RM2K/3. BUT - I am stuck clear at the end. HUGE SPOILER ALERT! I have killed Gwar, Clifford says "The quest is over," and - nothing happens. If I go back to the edge of the cliff, I find myself fighting Gwar again - and again - and again.

I've checked the map in RPGMaker 2000 and I can see what more is supposed to happen, but the switches "tommy" and "ominous door" don't ever get turned on.

Your download link doesn't work so I can't check to see if I've got an older map for the Moon.

Hi Echo

I'm glad you like the game. Keep in touch with the new site (soon to be newer, even) for more details about the game and news of an upcoming independent comic for Sword and the Fish Issue #1

The key to this problem is to fight Gwar again. During the battle, near the end, you should set a trigger off if his HP reach a certain level. It should work if you fight him two or three times. Since you're the first to note this, most people probably hit the trigger their first time. Not the best coding, but... well, it's a glitch. Try him again and enjoy the conclusion to the game!

I was just wondering, where do I find the blood of a brother cursed needed for the Haunted Forest? As well, can you really find poison for the guard in Zambooka, or was that just a joke?

12:10 PM
Anonymous Joel said...

RE: Anon.

Hello! Glad to see you've played through SatF a bunch.

Q1: the blood of a brother cursed in the haunted forest is a tricky one. You have to go to the final room of the castle there and investigate all four statues. If you say something wrong, you won't access the secret, so keep your wits about you. Once that's been triggered, return to the statue.

Q2: yes, you absolutely can find poison for the guard in Zambooka, and I suggest you do a little search for it so he lets you by. :D

-JOEL-

8:23 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

yeah, thanks for the reply. I found the poison after all.

I still can't find the castle or wherever in the Haunted Forest. I just keep going back to the same areas. I am assuming I am missing something, but I don't know what...

8:58 AM
Anonymous Joel said...

The Haunted Forest is a maze, for sure. The key is realizing which exits go where and mapping it out. For instance, there's 2 (3?) exits from the first screen - you'll recognize them after a while - at the side of the map. Each consequent map has 3 or 4 exits, each go somewhere precise. Through trial and error you can eventually find ones that lead to new maps, and then you just have to try each exit in those. Eventually you'll come to a totally fresh forest screen with a big castle in the middle and Alligator Girl wandering to the right. Hope that helps.

11:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Alright, thanks for the help with the haunted maze. I now think I noticed a bug with the teams in Gwar's Citadel. For some reason, Shen Zii was in all three teams (and took the lead of the non-Clifford teams instead of Headbutt and I forget who else), and I think she replaced Penelope and Presto Mundo in their respective teams (yet I can't remember). Is that a glitch, or is that intended?

9:08 PM
Anonymous Joel said...

Yo, anon. That is a big glitch. Remove Shen Zii from your party and try going back in. Normally, Shen Zii and the other secret character, if you have them, are assigned to wait and watch the airship. She should be in no parties going into the Citadel. I forget the groupings, but team 1 is: Clifford, Sasha, Penelope, Sweet C for sure.

Have fun in the Citadel. For the 'lights out' room, try to visualize it... then get lucky ;P
